The History of Browns Glass & Granite

George Brown & Sons Glass works was started in 1945 by George J. Brown and was later joined by his son Robert H Brown soon after the end of World War II.

The Browns started the business in a small garage in the back yard of their home on West Orange St in West York Boro. The main aspect of the business was making glass table tops for several furnitures stores located in Red Lion Pa.Later the Browns started doing windshield repairs as well as shower door installations which were becoming a popular trend among homeowners. During the the late 1950's the Browns built a new shop just west of their home at 1601 W Orange St. which is our present location.

In 1964 George Brown past away, and his son Robert H Brown continued to grow the business though out the 1960's and 70's.

One night while Robert was working on a Brownie project with his two twin daughters , he came up with the idea to add the “Brownies” to his company logo. George Brown & Son is now known today as the “Brownies” and proudly displays the logo on all their company vehicles.

George Brown & Son began doing storefront work during the 1960's. Commercial storefronts are now the leading sales segment of the company.

In 1979 after finishing college Robert G Brown son of Robert H joined the family business full time at which time the start of all glass racquetball courts became very popular. Bob Brown Jr. and all of the “Brownies” traveled the country installing the glass courts from as far North as Boston, South to Miami and as far West as Houston.

In 1996 Robert H Brown past away, and Robert G Brown (Bob Jr) took over leadership of the company and became the 3rd generation to continue the success of the family business as it is today. In addition to storefronts and residential shower doors and mirrors Robert expanded the company in 2002 and added yet another segment of the business by fabricating and installing custom granite counter tops.

In 2003 George Brown & Son shortened its name to “Browns Glass & Granite”

In March of 2006, The Brownies did their largest commercial job to date. The job is located just north of Rt. 30 a the Fruitville Pike Interchange. The 4 story office building is made up of mostly glass on the outer shell of the building. In addition the company is also known for installing glass in popular locations such as McDonald's restaurants and Rutter's Farm Stores.
